Candles That Burn Too Bright: Why I No Longer Celebrate My Birthday

There was a time when birthdays felt like magic.
The cake. The laughter. The surprise messages from people you never expected to hear from. It all looked perfect on the outside.

But over the years, something shifted.

And no one really talks about it how the brighter the expectation, the deeper the quiet when those expectations are not met.

We dress these days up with glitter, photos, and cheerful captions.
But for some of us, birthdays and anniversaries carry more weight than joy.

They feel heavy.
Like a spotlight on everything and everyone that is no longer there.

I no longer look forward to my birthday.
It is not about age. I am not afraid of growing older.
It is something else entirely.

These “special” days have become reminders
Of names that do not show up.
Of messages that stay unread.
Of love that once felt effortless but now feels distant, or absent altogether.

It sneaks up on you.
One year, you realize you are no longer excited.
You are bracing.

Not because you dislike celebration.
But because you know that the loudest parts of it the music, the messages, the gifts rarely reach the part of you that longs to feel seen.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped tying joy to one date.

I do not wait for a crowd.

I do not need cake to feel noticed.
Instead, I look for something quieter.

A moment with my daughter.
A phone call that comes out of nowhere, not because the calendar said so, but because someone remembered.

A walk. A deep breath. A conversation that feels real.

I have learned to celebrate in small, sacred ways.
Ways that are not wrapped in ribbons, but in presence.

To those who love birthdays who feel genuinely lifted by them I truly hope that never changes for you.

But to those who shrink a little when the date gets closer,
You are not cold.
You are not broken.
You are just honest.

And that kind of honesty is a celebration in itself.

A Thought to Keep
“The most beautiful days are not always marked on a calendar. Sometimes, they are the quiet ones when your heart feels understood, and no one had to be reminded.”
